VVD seeks debate on St. Maarten?s budget

THE HAGUE--The governing liberal democratic VVD party in the Second Chamber wants to add the latest rejection of St. Maarten's 2011 budget by the Council for Financial Supervision CFT to the debate on the Kingdom's guarantee function for Curaao and St. Maarten.

Member of Parliament Andr Bosman (VVD) filed the request Tuesday evening. He informed Parliament's Secretariat that he wants to have St. Maarten's budget added to the general debate. He also put in a request to have the debate on short notice, making it an urgent debate.

According to Bosman, it is important to convene the general debate on the guarantee function as defined in article 43 of the Kingdom Charter on short notice due to the urgent situation on St. Maarten. That debate hasn't been scheduled yet.

Bosman further indicated that he will seek a letter from Minister of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations Piet Hein Donner how to handle the matter of the rejected 2011 budget. He wants this letter before the general debate. Bosman's request will be handled during the regular meeting on procedures (regeling van werkzaamheden) next Tuesday.

Bosman's request is expected to receive broad support in the Second Chamber. Last week there was already broad support for the request of Bosman and his colleague Ronald van Raak of the Socialist Party (SP) to have a general debate on the guarantee function in light of the screening and integrity of Ministers in Curaao and the financial situation on St. Maarten.

Van Raak indicated on Tuesday evening that he would support Bosman's request to add St. Maarten's budget issue on the agenda of the debate and to speed up the date of the debate.
