PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) Parliamentarian George Pantophlet submitted eleven questions on Thursday to Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto about issues ranging from dollarization, creditors of the former Netherlands Antilles and the continuing Pelican Resort Club saga.
Pantophlet has used the right afforded to him under Article 62 of the Constitution to question the minister.
In the letter, the parliamentarian asked the minister to provide Parliament with a report of his January trip to Cura�ao to discuss dollarization. He also asked for
Parliament to get a copy of the minutes of the January 17 meeting on St. Maarten in which Central Bank Director Emsley Tromp made a presentation to the Council of Ministers, the Banker's Association and Foundation Tax Committee on dollarization.
Pantophlet also wants to know if Tromp has sent a report on dollarization to the Council of Ministers, as promised and if this report can be provided to the Parliament.
The parliamentarian also enquired whether Shigemoto has been able to contact the person on Cura�ao responsible for the disbursing of some NAf. 60 million to creditors of the former Netherlands Antilles and how much is owed to creditors who carried out work on St. Maarten for the former country.
On the matter of Pelican Resort, Pantophlet asked if the former resort owners owe government any outstanding taxes and if so, how will the taxes be collected.
He also asked if an exemption to the transfer tax for some US $1.2 million has been granted by government to the new resort owners as well as a "tax holiday."
Pantophlet also wants to know if the budget for the Corporate Governance Council has been approved by the Council of Ministers, what is St. Maarten's share of the gold reserves of the former Netherlands Antilles and, if Parliament can get the report of the special committee with responsibility for the Social Insurance Bank SVB and the General Pension Fund.
