Hodge released from detention

page1a221PHILIPSBURG--Evelyn Hodge one of the persons arrested by the police investigating forgeries at the Immigration offices in regard to the Brooks Tower Accord (BTA), has been released.

Her release came shortly after 5:00pm Friday following representations made to the Prosecutor's Office by her attorney Cor Merx.

In an interview at Chesterfield's restaurant immediately following her release, and in the presence of her former boss, former Lt. Governor Dennis Richardson, and Merx, Hodge, who looked a little pale and emotional, told The Daily Herald, "I certainly feel a lot better than I did this morning. I called Cor (Merx) and he went into action straightaway. I have been inside for 14 days."

Hodge apparently was disorientated by her imprisonment and when it was pointed out that she had actually been detained since January 21 and in fact had been 18 days she looked quite tearful.

She continued, "Anyway I am happy to be going home with friends and to move on with life. I know that I have special people and special friends."

Merx said, "I am very happy to be able to say that the Prosecutor's Office has taken a very reasonable attitude over this matter and was prepared to listen to what I had to say. The investigation is still going on and, of course, Evelyn will be available to assist with any aspect of the investigation as required. She has cooperated fully throughout."

Richardson said, "She worked for me for six years and in all that time I never knew her to do anything that was inappropriate. She was always attentive and helpful. I could not believe that she would be involved. I still don't believe that she has done anything wrong."

Merx was asked whether Hodge was still a suspect and replied, "Yes, she is still a suspect, but not every suspect needs to be behind bars. She is a mother of a student who is studying in Holland and also cares for her 91-year-old mother. We do not feel that there will be any charges at the end of all this, but we shall take it step by step."

Hodge said she had been treated fairly and well looked after by the authorities.

This reporter asked Hodge about her weight loss and she confirmed that she had lost a considerable amount of weight during her incarceration. She wanted everyone to know, however, that she did not recommend a term in prison as a diet and as a location for beauty treatment.
