Trailer truck flips over in Cole Bay

page5b286PHILIPSBURG--A tractor-trailer carrying a forty-foot container with a load of beverages overturned on the Osborne Kruythoff Roundabout in Cole Bay on April 23 around 12:00 noon.

Coming down Cole Bay Hill and heading toward Union Road, the driver of the red Volvo tractor-trailer with licence plate V1150 was speeding and could not down-shift quickly enough while making the turn, causing the accident.

The driver's left leg was pinned under the steering wheel and the Fire Department had to utilise the Jaws of Life (a hydraulic rescue tool) to extract him from the tractor-trailer, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson said. It took the Fire Department about an hour and a half to rescue the driver.

The accident caused a 2½-hour traffic back-up, as large cranes and heavy transport vehicles were called to the site to assist in cleaning up the wreckage and transporting the tractor-trailer and container to another location.

School buses also were affected and many students of Milton Peters College, Sundial School, St. Maarten Academy and Vocational School were dropped off in the Cay Hill area and had to walk over the hill to go home.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered some minor scrapes and bruises, but is doing fine. He was transported to St. Maarten Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.
