Sarkozy and Hollande neck and neck in St. Martin vote

~Hollande wins by 1.32 per cent margin~

MARIGOT--Socialist favourite Francois Hollande won Sunday's first round of the presidential election in French St. Martin by a small margin of only 1.32 per cent of votes cast, before conservative President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Preliminary figures provided by the Préfet Délégué of St. Barths and French St. Martin after the ballot boxes closed on Sunday revealed that Hollande had won 35.32 per cent of the votes in French St. Martin, and Sarkozy 34 per cent. Far-rightist Marine Le Pen came in third with 12.51 per cent of votes cast.

Far-left Jean-Luc Melenchon won 6.36 per cent of the vote, with centrist Francois Bayrou coming in fifth with 6.34 per cent.

Figures showed that 5,520 of 17,814 eligible voters, or 30.99 per cent of voters, had cast their vote in one of the 13 polling stations in the first round of the presidential election.

Le Pen threw France's presidential race wide open on Sunday by scoring nearly 20 per cent overall in the first round; votes that might determine the runoff between Hollande and Sarkozy.

Hollande led Sarkozy by about 29 to 26 per cent nationwide in reliable computer projections broadcast after polling stations closed, and the two will meet in a head-to-head decider on May 6.

Le Pen's record score of 18-20 per cent was the sensation of the night, beating her father's 2002 result and outpolling Melenchon, in fourth place on 11 per cent. Bayrou finished fifth on less than 10 per cent.

St. Barth's proved to be a firm stronghold for President Sarkozy with no less than 62.44 per cent of votes cast. Hollande did not do very well among St. Barth's voters. With 10.08 per cent of the votes Hollande came in third place. He was also beaten by Le Pen, who scored 11.41 per cent.

Turnout in St. Barth's was much higher than in St. Martin, with 2,757 of 4.871 eligible voters (56.60 per cent) casting their votes.
