Simpson Bay Resort workers unsuccessful in securing pay

page1a277PHILIPSBURG--Employees of the Simpson Bay Resort (SBR) on Thursday went on the hunt for their salaries at three different locations and came up empty every time. According to the recent verdict against the SBR, the resort had to pay the salaries of its employees by Thursday, April 12, or face penalties.

With that verdict in hand, WIFOL President Theophilus Thompson and SBR employees went to the resort on Thursday afternoon seeking payment. When no management executive was available to answer their inquiries, they were told to go to Parliament since that is where General Manager of SBR and Member of Parliament Jules James was.

When they arrived at the Parliament Building, Parliament was in session so the employees waited in the lobby, quietly, for James who did not emerge to speak to the SBR employees. MP Louie Laveist then went out to speak to the employees then returned to Parliament Hall to speak to James who maintained that he was busy in a session of Parliament and could not address the concerns of the employees at that moment.

Laveist then advised the employees to go to the Government Administration Building to get answers since Parliament is not the place to get them. Soon thereafter, James left Parliament to attend a funeral. When the employees realised he had left the building they hurried after him in an attempt to get answers but were unsuccessful.

Earlier in the day, at the WICLU weekly press briefing, Thompson said WIFOL had not heard from SBR since the verdict. He suspected that SBR was stalling for the court's decision today on whether the SBR will win a stay (freeze) on the execution of the verdict until the appeal process is complete. Thompson added that WIFOL will request government's mediator to convene a meeting between the union and management of SBR.

Thompson also extended an "olive branch" to the possible new owners of SBR, Hard Rock Café International. He said WIFOL has always had a good, professional working relationship and WIFOL would like to extend the same "goodwill" to the possible new owners. "We are open for dialogue about their venture into St. Maarten," Thompson said.
