Boardwalk robber sent to jail for seven years

PHILIPSBURG--The Court of First Instance on Wednesday sentenced Romaine Walters to seven years for three New Year's robberies of tourists on the Boardwalk Promenade in Philipsburg and possession of a firearm with ammunition.

Several tourists were robbed at gunpoint on the Boardwalk during the early hours of January 1, by three men, among which was Walters (22).

One couple was threatened and forced to give up their belongings, among which were a wallet and an underwater camera, while a gun was put at their throat and head.

A little later, another couple was robbed of a backpack with an access card and safe key of Holland House hotel, US $130, two phones, an IPhone, a photo camera, a ring, a brown shoulder bag, a drivers' licence, a bank card, clothing, a pair of shoes, a bottle of perfume and home keys.

Judge Monique Keppels stated Wednesday she found Walters guilty of theft with violence in committing armed robbery in the early morning of January 1. Shortly after this incident, he had robbed another group of four tourists, which he had threatened and beaten with his Hi Point CF 380 pistol.

In sentencing, the Judge took into account that Walters had previously been convicted in Anguilla.

Co-suspects 18-year-olds Nayshawn Brown and Kietdaro K. Liburd, both from Anguilla, already stood trial on February 16. They were both sentenced to three years.
