PHILIPSBURG--Schoolteacher Sharon Layne won the title of Miss Mature Carnival Queen on Monday, April 23, the first time the show has been part of Carnival festivities in 6 years. The consensus was that Layne was consistently excellent in all of her appearances, which elevated her above her seven fellow competitors.

The show was not without its hiccups, however, finishing at approximately 3:00am Tuesday after a start of approximately 8:00pm Monday. Patrons in the village complained of an "entertainment-heavy" event that was too drawn-out. Complaints were also rife about the qualifications of a pageant judging panel that included musicians and an archaeologist.

St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) admitted that there were problems with the production that were out of its control and apologised for the delays the public had to endure.

"The SCDF learns something with every event, even if that event was exceptionally good or had some negative incidences. As usual, the SCDF will move quickly to address whatever shortcoming burdened the production of the pageant.

"We defend unfair criticism of our events, but can admit when we could have done a lot better even if circumstances were not in our control. We most definitely will do better moving forward.

"We thank the public for their patience during the course of the night as well as the Police Force who were very cooperative in allowing us to go an hour over time. The SCDF does, however, congratulate the new Mature Queen Sharon Layne on her victory. She did herself, her family and friends and our foundation proud," SCDF said in a statement.

Taking home first runner-up honours was Tatiana Arrindell, who was boosted by a steel pan performance for her talent segment. Second runner-up honours went to Diana Gumbs and third runner-up went to Davia Bailey-Wilson.

Sharon Layne also won the Best Talent award for her rendition of Etta James' hit "At Last," Best Interview, Best Introduction Speech and Best Personality.

Tatiana Arrindell won Best Sports Wear, Best Evening Wear and Miss Photogenic. Davia Bailey Wilson won Best Carnival Costume.
