Authors cross the seas to read in St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG--Four authors from different parts of the world will be touring Aruba, St. Maarten and Curaçao in April. In St. Maarten, authors David van Reybrouck (Belgium), Petina Gappah (Zimbabwe), Helon Habila (Nigeria/US) and Rodaan Al Galidi (Netherlands/Iraq) will be teaming up with local authors for a presentation on Sunday, April 14, at Philipsburg Cultural and Community Centre.

Starting at 4:00pm, Writers Unlimited will feature performances of local and international writers, poets and musicians. The names of participating local authors will be made public at a later date.

The Caribbean tour will be organized in cooperation with Writers Unlimited, Philipsburg Jubilee Library, Fundashon Planifikashon di Idioma (FPI) in Curaçao and Biblioteca Nacional in Aruba. This will be the fifth tour of the Dutch Caribbean since 2003.

All writers will be reciting from their work in the original language. Translations into English and Papiamentu will be simulcast. Theme of the tour is "The Power of Memory" in connection with history and literature.

Antillean authors Richenel Ansano, Lucille Berry-Haseth, Cathleen Giterson, Rosabelle Illes, Mario Kleinmoedig, Dora Lauffer-Mathilda, Ryan Oduber, Guineta de Palm, Sheila Payne, Miriam Sluis, Jossy Tromp and others will participate.

After the tour's start in St. Maarten, performances are also scheduled at Hardin Arubiana Caribiana in Aruba on April 17, and in Curaçao at Teatro Luna Blou on April 20 and Villa Maria on April 21.
