TGO Vesuvius operation results in eight arrests

page1a155SOUTH REWARD--An operation codenamed "Vesuvius" carried out by the Large Scale Investigation Team TGO, involved the searching of several homes in St. Maarten early Wednesday morning.

Executed simultaneously at 10 different locations, Vesuvius resulted in the arrest of eight suspects and confiscation of several guns, weapons and a considerable amount of drugs and money. The search was authorised by the Prosecutor's Office based on information linking the suspects to a number of violent murders in St. Maarten.

"During the past few months, the investigating team has conducted an in-depth investigation, and has identified the possible suspects and accomplices of at least five murders/liquidations and two attempted murders which took place between April and September of this year in St. Maarten. The investigation indicates that these murders took place within the criminal scene," said Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos.

The TGO comprises the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM, the Kingdom Detective Cooperation Team RST and other law enforcement agencies. Assisting the officers were five specially trained dogs: one from St. Maarten, one from Aruba and three from Curaao.

The suspects O.J. (35), C.R. (29), E.L. (28), C.F. (36), E.M. (34), D.T. (25), A.D. (30), all residing on the Dutch side were arrested simultaneously at different locations. One suspect K.M. (27) was arrested on the French side in collaboration with the Gendarmerie Nationale during these actions. His house was subsequently searched. Six of the eight suspects were St. Maarteners. The other two were from St. Vincent and Jamaica.

The suspects were brought before the Acting Prosecutor and all were remanded in custody. They will be questioned in the coming days and further investigations will be conducted into the confiscated items.

Law enforcement organisations outside of St. Maarten also aided in preparing for this operation. These included the Curaao Police Force KPC, the Aruba Police Force KPA, Korps Politie Caribisch Nederland (Bonaire), the Police Force of the Netherlands, the Curaao Customs Department, the Royal Marechaussees, the Gendarmerie Nationale and the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard KWCarib.

"They all have provided and still are providing all necessary cooperation and assistance to this large scale investigation. Until today more than 30 detectives have been working together on TGO Vesuvius and a total of 150 investigating officers took part in the actions of this morning.

"The Prosecution Service considers it appropriate to use this opportunity to thank all the services mentioned above and those authorities who carry their responsibility in all the countries within the Kingdom, as well as the Gendarmerie Nationale, for the outstanding cooperation during the preparation and execution of today's operations. The assistance rendered and still to come is highly appreciated," said Mos.
