Death toll rises to 20

The death toll from the stormy weather conditions rose to 20 by Monday morning while 20 fishermen are reported missing, Disaster Management Centre (DMC) announced.

Last week’s gale-force storm and heavy showers have affected 66286 people of 16837 families.� According to the DMC, 737 houses have been fully damaged while 6400 partially.


The worst affected�were the coastal areas of Galle and Matara where 17 people were confirmed dead by Friday.� Floods were also reported from the Northern, Eastern, Southern and North Central Provinces. In Monaragala, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa districts overflowing water reservoirs have forced the irrigation authorities to open sluice gates.
