Front Street store robbed

~ Police capture one of three suspects ~

PHILIPSBURG--A Front Street jewellery store was robbed by two armed men on Monday around 11:30am. Quickly responding police officers caught and arrested the driver of the getaway vehicle, but the two other men fled on foot.

The daytime robbery of Jewels Forever was planned by three men. Two took part in the in-store shakedown and a third waited in the getaway car. Several store workers and management were held at gunpoint while the men broke into the glass showcase, removing the pieces. The robbers broke into only one case before they fled the store.

Arriving in record time, police were able to catch up with the men before they had driven too far off. The trio ran in different directions. Police chased one man into Fort Willem. The man escaped, but police found his clothing and gun hidden near a house in the area.

When officers arrested the driver, they found on his person a piece of jewellery with the price tag still attached. Several other stolen pieces were found. Police are hoping to recover all at the end of the investigation.

Descriptions of the two other suspects and the car they were driving were not released. Officers are still investigating and actively searching for the escaped suspects.

In a statement, police said strategic placing of patrols to increase visibility and combat the increase of crime in the Philipsburg shopping area had made it possible to respond quickly and capture of one of the suspects.

Jewels Forever management confirmed that all persons present in the store were physically unharmed, but a bit shaken.
