Simpson Bay Resort workers sent home

~ Told they can sign contracts to work for resort~

PELICAN--Simpson Bay Resort (former Pelican Resort) workers were sent home mid-afternoon on Friday and were told that they can resume their employment if they signed contracts with the company.

The workers were given packing orders by General Manager of the Simpson Bay Resort Management Company (SBRMC) Jules James, also a Member of Parliament (MP).

The sending home of the workers follows the resort winning a court case based on what is being seen as a technicality. It could not be ascertained how many workers were affected. Efforts to reach James last night proved futile.

Workers Institute of Organised Labour (WIFOL) president Theophilus Thompson declined to comment when contacted last night. He said all correspondences will be through the union's attorneys.

One of the workers told The Daily Herald last night that the employees were summoned to an emergency meeting at 2:30pm on Friday. At that meeting, James told the workers that the company had won the court case. According to the worker, James said the verdict indicates that they were not employed by the SBRMC and the company was under no obligation to keep them.

He told the workers that they had to leave the premises at 3:00pm. The worker said all employees' punch-in cards were taken by Human Resources so there was no way they could have punched in or out.

"Many of the workers were upset," the employee said. "We were shocked because we did not even know there was a court case today [Friday]."

James also informed the workers, the staffer said, that Human Resources would be open for them to sign contracts to work for SBRMC. The worker contented, however, that they are already employees of the SBRMC and not the former Pelican Resort as this does not exist anymore.

A group of workers went down to the office of the Workers Institute of Organised Labour to meet with Thompson. However, Thompson was locked in a meeting on another labour issue.

The worker said they were assured by one of WIFOL's attorneys that they would get a chance to meet with the union on Monday.

"We don't know what is going on, we need some information," said another worker.
