Parliament seeks meeting with building contractors

PHILIPSBURG--Parliament is seeking a hearing with contractors specifically involved in the building of homes to discuss pending changes to the Civil Code that would significantly impact the way they conduct business.

Parliament had a hearing with the Real Estate Association St. Maarten RAM and the St. Maarten Real Estate Association on Monday, to allow their input on similar changes to the Civil Code related to their businesses, such as contracts needing to be in writing and the introduction of a three-day cooling off/reflection period before contracts go into effect.

With the Windward Islands Contractors Association being defunct, Parliament has requested the assistance of RAM board member and St. Maarten Hospitality and Trade Association (SHTA) Vice President Marc van der Bilt to liaison with contractors.

Also a contractor, Van der Bilt gave some indication during the hearing about the impact the changes would have on that sector. His assistance was sought because SHTA has several contractors as members.

President of Parliament Gracita Arrindell made the request to Van der Bilt just before closing the session. As much information as possible on these "very, very significant changes" must be shared. "This is not a thick law, but one with a lot of consequences for everyone."
