Laws to allow abortions of deformed and mentally disordered children during pregnancy

Plans are underway to enact laws that would permit parents to abort deformed or mentally disordered children during the initial stages of pregnancy, an official at the Ministry of Child Development and Women Affairs said.

Secretary of Child Development and Women's Affairs, Sumithra Rahubadda said that discussions were afoot with the Health Ministry,Ministry of Justice and Law Reforms in this regard inorder to implement this law.

According to the existings laws  a child could be aborted only if there is a risk to the mother. However, according to the new move, should parents discover that their child is deformed or mentally disordered during pregnancy could now opt to abort the baby.
