Theo: No changes coming to coalition

PHILIPSBURG--No changes in the composition in the United People's (UP) party-Democratic Party (DP) coalition are looming, in spite of the "rampant" discussions within the community, declared UP leader Deputy Prime Minister Theo Heyliger on Wednesday.

"One year going and we continue to be very strong," he said during the weekly Council of Ministers Press Conference Wednesday.

The coalition gets "dragged into new speculations" every day, "no matter how many times it is put in the media there is no problem in the coalition." Heyliger said that this reminds him of the days his great-aunt used to watch novella such as Dallas and thinks there is niche to be filled now that those soap-operas are no longer on television.

Heyliger said he had congratulated now independent Member of Parliament (MP) Frans Richardson for "leaving the National Alliance" and looked forward to working with him for the betterment of the people.

There will be "no reneging" on the agreements between UP, DP and independent MP Patrick Illidge.

Since Richardson announced his resignation from NA on Monday, Heyliger said his BlackBerry had been "active" with messages about "who is going home" and his answer to that had been, "I go home every day. I don't know where others go." The messages about "going home" refer to speculations that there may be a coalition shakeup.

As for the tying in of the issuance of a casino licence to an associate of Richardson to operate a casino in a building the MP owns, Heyliger said Economic Affairs Minister Franklin Meyers had explained the procedures followed for the issuance of the licence last week.

The decision to issue a licence to Millennium Star Casino was made by the former National Alliance (NA) government in September 2010, but the licence was not given out, because the proper procedure to pull in the licence of Dolphin Casino, which had gone bankrupt, had not been completed. The court case related to that matter was resolved in July.

Heyliger said he was interested in meeting with the editors of the media houses, especially of the newspapers "who write the 'cute editorials,'" so they can share any additional information he does not know on matters such as this.
