Former CFT president Weitenberg passes away

page1b099NOORDWIJK AAN ZEE--Former President of the Committee for Financial Supervision (CFT), Professor Hans Weitenberg (72) passed away in the Netherlands on Friday after a short period of illness. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones. A week earlier, Weitenberg resigned as CFT president. He will be buried in his home town of Noordwijk aan Zee.

Weitenberg, born in Workum, Friesland, was an authoritative expert in public finance. After studying general economics at the University of Tilburg, he worked for 20 years at the Central Planning Bureau among other organisations.

In the Kingdom, he was respected and appreciated, predominantly because of his strong involvement with the islands, according to a press release issued by CFT on Sunday.

He first visited the former Netherlands Antilles in the late 1970s as member of a team which was established by the former Dutch Finance Minister Fons van der Stee to record the problems with the relationship between the Netherlands and the Antilles.

Later, Weitenberg was a member of a Kingdom Committee in charge of the preparations for country-within-the-kingdom status for Aruba.

The late Boelie van Leeuwen praised Weitenberg in his book Geniale Anarchie for his matter-of-fact way of presenting financial facts.

In 2007, based on a Temporary Decree of the Kingdom, Weitenberg became CFT president for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba and in 2008 for Curaao and St. Maarten. As of October 2010, two new CFT boards emerged with Weitenberg as president of both.

Weitenberg built up CFT into an authoritative institution. He had "a natural predominance and an amiable personality, which always brought tranquility, especially in the occasional tense situation, or when delicate matters had to be dealt with."

According to the press statement, his integrity and fairness made him an unquestioned person for all parties in the kingdom. This eased the way for CFT to develop into a completely independent institution that stands above all parties.

CFT Curaao and St. Maarten consists now of Margo Vliegenthart as member for the Netherlands and Alberto Romero of Curaao and Richard Gibson Sr. for St. Maarten. For the CFT board responsible for Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba, Max Pandt is the member together with Vliegenthart.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers will decide shortly on a new CFT president.
