Lievense reports on Scott Road collapse

PHILIPSBURG--Lievense N.V. has submitted a report to government concerning the section of L.B. Scott Road that collapsed on company's watch. Lievense was the site supervision firm contracted on the project and, according to Head of the Department of New Works Kurt Ruan, approved the work once it was "completed."

A nearby trench along the newly asphalted road was dug to facilitate the laying of piping to nearby properties onto the main sewage line. The work crew apparently did not back-fill the trench after the pipe was laid, leaving it without proper compacting and creating a vacuum. With no compacting, the sand in the foundation of the road moved towards the lowest point of the trench which caused the collapse of the road.

Ruan did not divulge any information from Lievense's report but confirmed that site supervision companies "overlook and approve the work of the contractor." With that revelation, when asked to confirm that Lievense missed the aforementioned mistakes on the L.B. Scott Road, Ruan declined comment.
