Police chief?s home burgled, gun taken

OYSTER POND--An intruder(s) broke into the home of Police Chief Commissioner Peter de Witte yesterday, making off with a gun, among other things, and leaving his home ransacked.

In a brief statement De Witte said he had come home after work to find his place in a mess. When exactly the intrusion occurred is not known, but it is believed that it happened during the day.

An official report of the incident was filed and the residence was processed for evidence. When called for a statement De Witte had not completed an inventory of his possessions to list exactly what had been taken, but he confirmed that a firearm was missing.

He said he did not consider this break-in special or more important than others on the island.
