Fleming fined 45,000 euros for violating labour laws

MARIGOT--The presiding judge in court Thursday upheld the prosecutor's demands and fined former Mayor of Saint Martin Albert Fleming 45,000 euros with an additional six month suspended prison sentence for contravening labour laws during the building of an extension to his house in Sandy Ground in 2005.

The court heard several persons employed by Fleming did not have work contracts and social charges were not paid for the workers. Furthermore at the time of the control by the works inspector no building permit had been issued for the extension to the house.

Fleming's lawyer Matre Luc Godefroy said an appeal was being considered and this has to be done within ten days.

Other defendants associated with the project were also fined according to the seriousness of the offence, from a one month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 1,500euros to three months suspended prison sentence and a fine of 4,500euros.

One 63-year-old mason was fined 75euros per day for ninety days, amounting to 6,750euros, on account of a previous police record. He has three months to complete the payment or face ninety days in prison.
