UP and Pride to meet about plastic bags ban

PHILIPSBURG--The United People's (UP) party is moving ahead with an initiative law to ban the importation and use of single-use plastic bags. The draft will be discussed by environmental awareness group Pride Foundation on Friday.

UP Member of Parliament (MP) Johan Leonard told the press on Tuesday, "I took the ball and ran with it," in spite of the motion passed by Parliament urging government to bring legislation to ban the single-use bags.

Based on the constitution, an MP can present an initiative law to Parliament at any time, notwithstanding an approved motion on the same topic.

Leonard and independent MP Frans Richardson had presented a joint motion to ban the use of the bags during the 2012 budget debate in May. The motion was unanimously accepted by MPs.

The meeting with Pride is geared towards getting the foundation's point of view about "what we have put on paper," Leonard said. The draft law will also be discussed with Richardson and other MPs to get their support.

Leonard was called out by a member of the press for having his sandwich in a plastic bag next to him during Tuesday's UP press conference in Parliament House. The MP was asked if he did not believe in the phrase, "charity begins at home."

Leonard said in his "defence" that the sandwich in the single-use plastic bag was not bought by him and that he would tell the purchaser to not take a bag in the future. He added that without a law there is no stopping the use of the single-use plastic shopping bag.
