GEBE responsible for the street lights

PHILIPSBURG--The responsibility for the streetlights lies with utility company GEBE. As such, the company is responsible for approximately 250 lights on the Dutch side of the island that are not working and that have drawn criticism through social media and local talk shows. The airport area in particular and stretches of Simpson Bay and Cole Bay Hill are in complete darkness.

GEBE Chief Financial Officer Romelio Maduro confirmed that GEBE was aware of the streetlight situation and was taking action to resolve it. He added that the process would take time, but did not elaborate.

Ministry of VROMI Secretary General Louis Brown also confirmed GEBE's responsibility recently.

"The responsibility for the maintenance of these lies with NV GEBE, based on the electricity concession. However, it has not been adequately living up to this obligation. We are in dialogue with NV GEBE in order for it to do so," Brown said.

In the meantime, the public continues to complain of unsafe feelings in dark neighborhoods and on dark main roads.
