Suspect in car chase held with skimming device, counterfeit $

PHILIPSBURG--The suspect involved in Tuesday’s car chase has been identified as Dominican Republic national J.J.M. (35).

He was arrested Tuesday and handed over to the Detective Department for further investigation after a considerable amount of counterfeit American currency and a “skimming” device used to withdraw money from an ATM illegally were found in the black Jeep Wrangler with licence plate R-441 he was driving, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson stated in a press release Wednesday.

Henson said the Police Central Dispatch had been called around 12:10pm on Tuesday, July 10, to investigate two unknown men driving the black Jeep Wrangler.

The Zero-Tolerance patrol spotted the vehicle in the parking lot of Francis Bar on A.Th. Illidge Road around 12:15pm. Officers began to approach the vehicle, but the driver reversed and took off towards The Cottage roundabout.

The chase continued on A.Th. Illidge Road towards Prins Bernhard Bridge and several pedestrians were forced to jump out of the way to avoid being struck by the vehicle, the release continued.

Several patrols were then dispatched to assist in the chase, which continued on Long Wall Road, Onasha Jones Street, Kerkhofsteeg and Little Bay Road. The Wrangler struck a blue jeep that was parked on the side of Little Bay Road. It also struck a pedestrian, who was treated on the scene by paramedics for minor injuries.

The Wrangler continued onto Fort Willem Road where J.J.M. lost control of the vehicle and became stuck over the trench. J.J.M. jumped out of the car and ran towards the bushes in the area. Police continued the chase on foot and J.J.M. was arrested shortly afterward and taken into custody.
