Hundreds meet deadline to object expansion plan

ST. EUSTATIUS--The final petitions objecting to the suggested changes to the island's spatial development plan were presented to Governor Gerald Berkel's Secretary Millicent Romney-Lijfrock Friday afternoon.

Reliable reports reaching The Daily Herald said that some 1,371 objections to the plan were registered with the government. These objections could delay, or possibly even result in stopping the planned NuStar expansion project in the Farm.

Residents of sister island Saba also sent in some 300 objections.

Governor Berkel announced that sometime next week the official total will be made known.

During the day the atmosphere at Charlie's place, where persons could sign the petition, was similar to that usually experienced at election time as residents turned out to sign against the expansion in the Farm.

Talking Blues host Joshua Spanner reported he was told that, if he did not back down with his protesting against the expansion in the Farm, he would be "wiped out." He was advised to file a complaint with the Police.

Concerned persons explained that many objections were not against the general expansion, but rather against expansion in the Farm or Cul-de Sac.

Meanwhile, members of the Statia Safe and Sound Foundation have stressed that in a democracy people have the right to stand up for what they believe in.
