Gracita votes on motion condemning her role

PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) objected on Monday to President of Parliament Gracita Arrindell voting on a motion that made specific reference to her and her role as President of Parliament.

The voting took place during a meeting of Parliament to debate the validity of the vote of United People's (UP) party Member of Parliament (MP) Jules James on a motion addressing an issue in which his name was specifically mentioned and in which he was involved as a proxy.

In the closing stages of the meeting MPs had to vote on three NA motions. The first one stated that Arrindell had violated Article 53 of the constitution by allowing James to vote on a motion in a meeting on November 17, 2011, in which "it had been clearly established that he was a proxy, being the General Manager of the Simpson Bay Resort Management Company."

When Arrindell voted against the motion, NA MPs raised a point of order contesting the validity of the vote. Arrindell said the concerns were noted, but her vote was still counted. The motion in question was voted down eight to six.

Democratic Party (DP) MP Roy Marlin said later that if Parliament continued along the line being pursued by the NA, then Parliament wouldn't be able to function.
