Fishermen return to sea, President visits fishing harbour

alt

Fishermen who have refrained from fishing in protest against the increase of fuel prices have decided to return to the sea with immediate effect.

After eights days of protest most of them opted to return with no immediate alternative left and most other sections of fishermen not joining the protest action.

Mostly fishermen from Negombo and Chilaw kept away from fishing, but those in the south, north and east continued with their fishing activities.

Earlier the fishermen said that they will not return to the sea until the government provides them fuel at the old prices, but there was no immediate response to their demand.

Instead, Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said that the best they could offer was the fuel subsidy which has been introduced last week.

Dr Senaratne said that arrangements will be made to pay the arrears as well as for them.

The decision to refrain from fishing resulted in fish prices showing an increase in the markets.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited fishermen in Tangalle and spoke to themabout the current situation.
