Carnival parade regains its lustre

Page1A233MARIGOT--The colourful adult Carnival parade in Marigot on Sunday showed signs of returning to its former glory after two years of parades that didn't quite meet expectations. No less than ten troupes took part in the usual circuit around town that began at the Agrément roundabout.

Organisers Festivités Carnavalesque de Saint Martin (FCDSM) had planned for fourteen troupes, but a few had to drop out at the last minute due to sponsor difficulties.

Newly-elected Carnival Queen 2012 Christiana Denis sat in the back of an open-top car with Miss Pitchounette 2012 Tiffany Anicette to lead the parade. They were followed by the Locomotiv troupe in blue and white costumes presenting their theme "Let's recycle."

Bethany Home was a new participant showing off a garden theme. Several of the elderly were seen taking part and carers pushed some of them along in decorated wheelchairs with foliage attached for shade. Conveniently, Bethany Home had reserved seating on Rue de La République to watch the parade and enjoy lunch. Among those watching with the elderly was former Mayor Albert Fleming.

Next up was blue and red Haitian troupe Ratine Villa presenting "Colours of Haiti," followed by Survivors, a troupe from the Dutch side sporting white Afro wigs. Then it was an Indian troupe with the theme "Rhythm of India" representing Bhangra.

Sunlight Revellers presenting St. Martin Showgirls with pink- and orange-feathered dancers were very polished as usual. Other troupes that took part in the procession were Jolly Eclipse with "Wonders of Egypt" theme and Amicale du Personnel presenting "Los Bandidos" complete with horse, stagecoach and Zorro look-alikes.

Grand Case Cultural Association presented "Arawaks – Wild Session" while SXM Hot and Spicy showed off a "Wonders of Africa" theme.

A good crowd of spectators turned out to watch the parade and was kept entertained before the start by DJ Black Boy and emcee Ricky Da Phox.

The live bands on the trucks included 3 Cylinder, Youth Waves, and Official Band.

A zouk concert is on the menu tonight at Carnival Village. The Grand Mardi Gras Parade is on Tuesday and the Ash Wednesday Parade on Wednesday.
