University gets new president

Page1B001PHILIPSBURG--The University of St. Martin (USM) has announced that Annelies van den Assem has been appointed to serve as its new President.

Van den Assem was appointed to the post as of May 1, 2011 and is currently familiarizing herself with the institution and making an assessment of operations and programmes, USM stated in a press release last night.

USM said Van den Assem studied law at the University of Leiden and Public Law at Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

In her professional life, she has worked at the Council of State, the General Audit Chamber, and the (former) Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management and the Ministry of Home Affairs and Kingdom Relations in the Netherlands.

Her specialty is setting-up organizations from the ground-up, as well as transforming and fostering innovation in existing organizations. Her last job was the setting up of the Cabinet of the Governor of St. Maarten.

Van den Assem succeeds Josianne Fleming-Artsen who had served for several years as President of USM but who retired last year.
