Three armed robbery suspects sent to Guadeloupe for trial

MARIGOT--The armed robbery suspects apprehended by Dutch St. Maarten police Friday afternoon have been placed in provisional detention in Guadeloupe pending their trial in the coming week.

The three, who are 27, 31, and 38 years respectively, were caught by police on Bush Road, on the Dutch side, in a bus after the Dutch side police were alerted by the Gendarmerie. They allegedly had stolen firearms and stolen cash in their possession.

A fourth suspect was arrested by police in Sucker Garden.

The three suspects caught in the bus were handed over to the French side detectives around 5:00pm on Friday.

Earlier, at 4:15pm on Friday the three suspects allegedly stole the contents of three cash registers from Bellevue businesses at gun point. Gendarmes immediately informed their Dutch side counterparts that the suspects escaped by boarding a bus heading in the direction of Cole Bay.

The gendarmerie also reported that just before 6:00pm Thursday, a Change Point in Marigot was robbed at gun point by two individuals who threatened the employee with a hunting rifle. The suspects escaped in a car driven by an accomplice. The incident is under investigation.

Also on Thursday evening, during controls in Marigot, Concordia, and Agrment three men between 20 and 40 years were taken into custody by Gendarmes for drugs possession.

Some fifty rocks of cocaine, other small quantities of cocaine, cannabis, 335 US dollars in cash, and various weapons, were confiscated.

Gendarmes controlled a bus carrying children on Tuesday, May 10, and found that the driver had no permit for this activity and was residing illegally on the island. In addition, one rear wheel on the bus was considered unsafe. The bus was confiscated and the driver and his employer will be summoned to answer charges.
