Survey, clearing started at Emilio Wilson Estate

CUL DE SAC--The construction surveying and clearing of bush for the archaeological survey at Emilio Wilson Estate has started in preparation for the planned "Rockland Estate" recreational park.

A St. Maarten Archaeological Centre Simarc team headed by archaeologist Jay Haviser will commence its work on the estate later this month. This survey is very necessary, because developers want to be certain "we are not disturbing graves or valuable history" before starting construction.

"We anticipate a construction period of approximately one year from groundbreaking to opening of the park, Rain Forest Adventures Chief Engineer John Dalton told The Daily Herald.

Transfer of some 32 hectares of the estate to Rain Forest Adventures from the present owner is "in progress." This should be completed in six to eight weeks, after which pre-arranged construction and supply contracts will be consummated and construction will begin in earnest.

Some ten hectares of the property still is being considered for purchase by government.

"We are very much looking forward to bringing a fresh tourism product, new jobs and positive social benefit to the St. Maarten community," Dalton said.

The Rainforest Adventures developers received the building permit for the US $8 million recreational park in April.

They said all historical structures on the estate would be restored and protected while the company executes its recreational park activities such as zip lines and eco-tours to the top of Sentry Hill. Some 50,000 visitors are projected to use the facilities annually. The recreational business will occupy about four per cent of the entire 436,237-square-metre property.

Environmental and heritage activists are against the Rainforest Adventures project. They continue to advocate for government to buy the entire estate, not just a piece, as the entire estate is on the Monument List.
