Pride’s reusable totes aim to limit single-use plastic bags

page5c019PHILIPSBURG--Whether you need to carry a load of groceries, books or all the other items you need to make your life work, the large shopping totes from St. Maarten Pride Foundation are just the ticket.

The US-$3 tote is geared specially to supermarket shoppers as a means of eliminating single-use plastic bags. Proceeds from the bags will be used by the foundation to print more bags if needed or for community awareness events.

The bags were launched in time for World Ocean Day today, Friday, to increase awareness about the impact of plastic bags on land and in the oceans.

Pride Foundation urges residents to take a reusable tote when shopping for groceries and to refuse the plastic bags given out at the stores and curb the amount of trash and plastics that end up in the ocean by not littering.

Like the ocean-blue shopping totes, Pride calls on the community to wear blue as a tribute to what the ocean means to our life and livelihood today and to spend some time reflecting on our oceans.

Parliament had unanimously voted to implement a ban on single-use plastic bags on March 22. Two motions calling for this were presented by Members of Parliament (MPs) Johan "Janchi" Leonard (UP) and independent MP Frans Richardson. The two later worked on merging the motions into one.

The approved motion gives government 120 days to draft an ordinance for Parliament to approve, to ban the importation of plastic bags and call on wholesalers and retailers to provide paper, reusable or biodegradable bags.

The adopted motion has been sent on to government as the basis to start on the ordinance.

The Pride reusable totes are available from Pride President Jadira Veen at tel. 520-0650. The foundation encourages businesses that would like to sell the bag as a community service to also contact Veen.
