Man sentenced for stabbing his ex-wife

PHILIPSBURG--A 31-year-old man was found guilty in the Court of First Instance on Wednesday of stabbing and severely mistreating his ex-wife.

For these crimes, committed in May 2011, Safraz Hussein was sentenced to one year suspended, with two years' probation, mandatory aggression regulation training and 240 hours of community service. He also was put under supervision of a probation officer.

Hussein initially was charged with mistreatment and attempted manslaughter in the two incidents during which he had beaten his ex-wife on May 4, 2011, and had stabbed her twice in her back on May 16.

Hussein admitted to the crimes, committed after his wife had ended their relationship. He had had problems with accepting that their relationship was over and had refused to leave their house. He started mistreating his ex-wife after she had involved the police in her efforts to make him leave the house.

Prosecutor Bart den Hartigh said it could not be proven that the injuries could have caused the woman's death. Therefore, he dropped the attempted manslaughter charge and asked Judge Monique Keppels for a conviction on the lesser count of inflicting severe bodily harm.

A report by a probation officer stated that the defendant had some problems with controlling his aggression. The prosecutor therefore also recommended that the Court should impose aggression therapy, which normally takes 10 to 12 hours.

The judge found severe mistreatment proven and followed the prosecutor's proposal.
