Fugitives among six Anguillians arrested

Page1a194PHILIPSBURG--A sixth Anguillian was arrested in St. Maarten over the last two days. The suspect is believed to be involved with the five Anguillians who are currently being detained here as suspects in a number of robberies.

The man, who is reportedly a relative of one of the other arrestees, had visited the police station to enquire about the arrests. When officers checked his passport they found no stamp proving that he had entered the island legally. The reason for his detention was given as illegal entry into St. Maarten. This is believed to be the same reason four of the other arrestees are being held.

According to reports, the men claim that no stamp is given when entering the island via the French side. In any case, legal entry can be verified if their names appear in any of the ships' manifests.

Reports from Anguilla say three of the six arrestees are known as wanted criminals by Anguillian authorities. Most notable is Romain Walters, the suspect who was found and shot in a schoolyard on Front Street.

The Daily Herald reported on December 9, 2011, that Walters was believed to be in St. Maarten. He had escaped police custody on November 14 after he was arrested and charged for possession of a firearm and possession of goods suspected to be stolen. Anguillian authorities believed he was trying to go to St. Kitts or Nevis where he has relatives.

When taken to the Philipsburg police station, Walters reportedly identified himself as Troy Mussington. Through help from the Anguillian authorities information was obtained that properly identified the suspect. Also reported, but not yet confirmed, Walters was believed to be shot by a BavPol cadet.

Asked whether wanted arrestees would be extradited to Anguilla, Prosecutor Bart den Hartigh said it was possible, but no official request had yet been received from the Anguillian authorities.

Minister of Justice Roland Duncan said in an invited comment on Tuesday that all persons who are found guilty of criminal acts committed in St. Maarten are expected to serve time here.
