PHILIPSBURG--US basketball superstar Shaquille "Shaq" O'Neal created quite a stir in Philipsburg and later Marigot on Tuesday when he was recognised by fans while sightseeing and shopping in the two capitals. He was accompanied by an entourage that included his current girlfriend.
O'Neal, who retired after the 2010-2011 basketball season during which he played for the Boston Celtics, took time out to pose for photos with excited fans. Other than photo requests, the towering sportsman enjoyed the island's sights unhindered.
A source from Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) said O'Neal and his group had arrived in St. Maarten by private jet on New Year's Eve, December 31, and headed by boat to Anguilla, where they reportedly are spending most of their vacation time.
A 40-second clip titled "Shaquille O'Neal shopping in St. Maarten" was posted on Youtube.com. The clip showed O'Neal in Philipsburg where he greeted cruise ship passengers and people from some of the stores. One fan exclaimed in the clip: "It's the first time I am seeing him in real life."
