New Nachchikudhah Naval deployment opened

The Navy is strengthening its camps in the north western coast.

Secretary of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Thursday declared open the new Nachchikudah Naval Deployment.
The Secretary of Defence made an inspection tour in the Nachchikudah Naval Deployment including its agricultural project and the jetty.

Established in January 2010, the Naval Deployment is positioned on a locality rich in agriculture and bordered by the strategically important North-western coastal belt. It consists of four Naval Detachments and comes under the North-central Naval Command. The Nachchikudah Naval Deployment provides security to the lagoons, coastal belt, civilians in Vedittaltivu, Illuppakadawai, Waleipadu and Devil Point and functions as deterrence against smuggling of drugs and contraband by sea.
Earlier, Nachchikuda was a major stronghold of Tamil Tiger terrorists in the north-western coast where the LTTE had a sea tiger camp until it was taken into control by the Sri Lanka security forces in 2008.
Chief of the Defence Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunathilaka, Area Commander North Central Command, senior officers attached to Naval Head Quarters along with Naval personnel of the North-Central Naval Command were present at the occasion.
