Fire-fighters get advanced ?Jaws of Life? rescue cutter

page1a080PHILIPSBURG--Fire-fighters now have the ability to cut through obstacles much more promptly and efficiently with the arrival of a new cutter from United States-based Holmatro Inc. at the Fire Department Thursday morning.

Eastern Regional Manager Mike Toeneboehn showed fire officers how to use the new rescue tool during a PowerPoint presentation at the station followed by a live test in the parking lot.

Fire-fighters also received airbags used to lift heavy materials (up to 24 tons) hindering a rescue operation.

Technical Department Fire Chief Marvin Dollison who was responsible for carrying out the purchase, was elated about the arrival of the new cutter. He thanked Government for its cooperation in the acquisition of the much-needed equipment and said he believed rescue operations would be executed better and faster.

"That golden hour we have to save a life, will turn into a golden 30 minutes, as the cutter enables us to transport someone in need of rescue much sooner,"

The need for the cutter derives from today's vehicle's frames that require more pounds of pressure to cut through despite their lighter weight resulting from world oil prices. The cutter has the ability to apply pressure in the tens of thousands.

The cutter uses "CORE Technology" that employs coaxial rescue equipment hose, couplers, pumps and tools. The hose design consists of a high pressure stream of fuel, surrounded and protected by the low pressure return, eliminating the need for two fuel lines that slow the cutting process. The couplers have a built-in automatic return valve that eliminates the need for a dump valve on the pump. "Simply connect the hose and you're good to go" said Toeneboehn.

The Fire Department will pursue/seek to obtain a concrete crusher next to plough through slabs of concrete obstructing access to someone in need of rescue.
