Zaysha, Rickyshio, Denisia take Junior Carnival titles

tom_frtpageBUSH ROAD--Grabbing the titles for Miss Amity, Best Talent, Best Introduction and Best Evening Wear, contestant number four Zaysha Sinclair went on to be crowned 2011 Junior Carnival Queen at the conclusion of last night's Junior Carnival Queen, Road March and Calypso Show.

Reigning Junior Road March King Rickyshio Bertie, showing the same vigour and zest as his father calypsonian Ricky "Fox" Bertie, retained his title when he amused both judges and the audience with his song "Miss My Carnival," accumulating 271 points. He won US $1,000, amongst other prizes.

The 2011 Junior Calypso title was awarded to Denisia "Lil Blossom" Martimbor for her song "Little sisters abstain," a strong message to her female peers. She accumulated 254 points and won $1,000, amongst other prizes.

Crowd favourite and the youngest contestant in the Junior Carnival Queen pageant Dashannique Pascal was the contest's first runner-up. She also took home the titles of Miss Popularity, Best Dance and Best Costume. Her costume themed "Flamboyant Royale" was a portrayal of St. Maarten's national tree.

Second runner-up in the contest Joliyah Abram also received the title of Miss Photogenic, while Caelann Moore was the contest's third runner-up.

Junior Carnival Queen Sinclair by far impressed the audience with her talent piece, an inspiring sign language performance, in which she encouraged youngsters to "get off the block, get on the bus and get busy." She also wooed the crowd with her "Sensational" themed purple evening gown; purple depicting the first emotion of love.

In the Road March competition the first runner-up slot was awarded to Rumari "The Messenger" Rogers, the son of calypsonian Carlyle Rogers. He accumulated 268 points for his song "Wave It." He also took home the first runner-up title in the calypso segment with 249 points for his song "It's up to you," a message to his peers on the importance of an education and themselves as the determining factor for a positive or negative future.

Second runner-up in the Road March segment was Chardonnay "Prince Chardonnay" Martes, accumulating 260 points for his song "Jump Up," while the second runner-up slot in the Calypso segment went to the reigning Junior Calypso Monarch Erissa "Lady Upsetter" Cozier for her song "We Fed Up."

"Lady Upsetter" did not take the news of her second runner-up win lightly and walked off stage without receiving her trophy. She won $250 which she, like the other winners, will receive on Carnival's closing night. She accumulated 236 points for her song that voiced concern about Government's overall consideration for the youth, environment, etc.

Starting promptly at 4:00pm the show saw a turnout of near 1,000 patrons in Celebration Palace. This was the first pre-show on the 2011 Carnival schedule. Next on the line-up is the Senior Calypso Eliminations, also to take place in Celebration Palace on Friday, April 1, starting at 8:00pm.
