GL says acting upon UN recommendations will be damaging to Lanka

The Government today said the UN should refrain from publishing the report of the Panel of Experts on alleged "war crimes' commited in Sri Lanka as well as acting on its recommendations as it would do ?irreparable? damage to the country.

?The UN should refrain from taking any steps which will make the task of reconciliation more difficult,? External Affairs MinisterG.L.Peiris told reporters at a press conference this afternoon.

He said the Panel of Experts which was appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations to advise him on accountability issues had acted outside its ambit and scope. ?The panel was not mandated by any UN body but was working on a personal mandate of the SG.It was purely an advisory body and not a fact finding body,? he said.

The Minister said it is totally unacceptable that a report of this nature has been submitted even before a local mechanism that is in place, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) had completed its mandate.

?What we say to the UN system is to work together with us. We have been a member of the UN system from its inception and the UN should reach out to Sri Lanka and help it as it comes out of a dark period, ?he added.

The Minister also categorically denied that the report had been leaked to the media by the government. ?What could be the motive of the Government in leaking such a report when we are objecting to its publication,? he asked.
