Bas Roorda case in hands of attorneys

PHILIPSBURG--Dismissed Head of Finance Bas Roorda?s bid for reinstatement appears to be heading to court. Finance Minister Hiro Shigemoto has confirmed receiving a letter from Roorda?s attorney and has turned it over to government?s attorney to deal with.

Roorda, who left the island for the Netherlands yesterday, was fired by the Council of Ministers on Thursday, March 31, for allegedly sharing government information with a third party. He had told this newspaper early this week that he would be seeking reinstatement and that the grounds for firing him with some two years still to go on his contract had not been detailed in the letter.

It has been speculated that the information had to do with an ongoing investigation into senior staffers at St. Maarten Tourist Bureau. However, Shigemoto called those speculations ?absurd? in a press release Wednesday.

?It is baseless, without any grounds. We are not a banana republic. The Public Prosecutor?s Office has its role to play. We are a country governed by laws and nobody is above the law. The Council of Ministers did not fire the Interim Head of Finance because he allegedly filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor?s Office with respect to any alleged wrongdoings of other government officials,? Shigemoto also had stated.
