Marlin: Nothing was solicited, Samir offered to support NA

~ Says politicians need to act in country's best interest ~

PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) leader Member of Parliament (MP) William Marlin says he never solicited any campaign contribution from owner of "The Box" Samir Andrawos, contrary to the impression Deputy Prime Minister Theo Heyliger attempted to paint by reading an e-mail from him (Marlin) to Andrawos in Thursday's Parliament meeting on the budget.

Marlin said the e-mail "shows the type of person William Marlin is."

He said Andrawos was not his "enemy" and explained that he had looked into Andrawos' request for a building permit for "The Box" in Cay Hill, but after discovering irregularities he had moved against the issuance of the building permit and wanted the additional floor of the building to be removed, as had been ordered by the court.

He noted that the court's ruling had not been executed to date, but the Justice Ministry was in talks to acquire "The Box" for use as a youth correctional centre and criminal psychiatric facility.

He said Andrawos had offered his support to the NA during the 2010 elections because he (Andrawos) and his family "wanted the government that was there before," the Democratic Party (DP) "never to return."

Marlin said that, unlike Heyliger who had "lied" in the Island Council in 2010 claiming that the then NA-led Executive Council had decided to grant the permit for "The Box" and sanction Andrawos with a community penalty to repave a part of Welgelegen Road, he (Marlin) had stood up and pointed out that that was a falsehood.

He said developers should not be allowed to go against stipulations and politicians needed to act in "the best interest of the country."

"We need to grow up as Members of Parliament and politicians," seriously look at issues and not let the country "drift off like a banana republic in the Caribbean Sea," Marlin said, adding that there was a time for political jabs when at the political podium, not in Parliament and when it was about upholding the constitution.

Heyliger had read the e-mail in which Marlin thanked Andrawos for his support financially and by the ballot, and had quoted information about the purchase of campaign flags and materials after Marlin had said that government helped only its friends and not local landowners.

Marlin said no campaign materials had been bought and that Andrawos only had made suggestions based on samples he had from suppliers of T-shirts and other items in his shops.
