Facts around Reid’s death still not clear

PHILIPSBURG--Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos confirmed on Friday that the woman driving the car that struck and killed 22-year-old Gerrick Reid had been released after six hours of questioning on Wednesday.

Mos said a friend of Reid's who had been walking with him at the time of the incident also had been released and the investigation would continue.

Mos said the chain of facts surrounding the case remained unclear and the investigation should reveal whether this was a crime, thus involuntary manslaughter, or simply an accident. He said there was little to indicate at this point in the investigation that it had been anything other than an accident. Moreover, there are no real witnesses who can give an account as to what happened, except for the friend who was walking with Reid.

However, this friend also is unclear as to what happened. Mos said the friend indicated that he and Reid had been walking along the road when he realised that Reid simply had disappeared from next to him.

From this point events become murky, with Mos himself not understanding why the friend didn't jump into the water to go after Reid. Mos said the friend simply might have been shocked and might not have realised that his friend had been knocked into the channel.

Mos explained that the Traffic Department would examine the road to see whether skid marks would provide insight into the driver's actions and to determine who had been walking closest to the road, or on the road, etc.

Mos said it appeared that Reid had drowned, although it is not certain he would have survived after sustaining head trauma on hitting the vehicle's windshield.

In the meantime, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson told this newspaper Reid's family had identified the body and it should be released for burial.
