Navy saves man who jumped off ferry in north

A man who attempted to drown himself by jumping off a moving ferry in the north has been rescued, the Navy said today.

Alert naval personnel attached to Kurikadduwan Naval Detachment of the Northern Naval Command reacted swiftly and saved a pilgrim from drowning in the Northern seas off Kurikadduwan on Friday, the Navy said.

The rescued was rushed to Kayts General Hospital on completion of emergency medical treatment on shore by Navy medical personnel. His condition is now stable.

The 30-year old male from Mankumban, Velani, had attempted to drown himself by jumping overboard from a ferry plying between Kurikadduwan and Nagadeepa, having discarded his life jacket at mid-sea.

He had even refused to hold on to the life belt thrown from the ferry in an apparent bid to commit suicide. The ferry alerted the SLN life saving personnel by raising a red flag. Responding swiftly an SLN Rescue Boat reached the location and took the victim onboard in an unconscious state, the Navy said.
