Motion of no confidence passed against Schmidt

ST. EUSTATIUS--The proposed motion for a vote of no confidence against Finance Commissioner Glennville Schmidt was passed during the Island Council meeting Wednesday afternoon.

The meeting was chaired by Governor Gerald Berkel. Present were Island Council coalition members Reginald Zaandam (UPC), Franklin Brown (STEP) and Millicent Lijfrock-Marsden (PLP), and opposition members Rueben Merkman (DP leader) and Koos Sneek.

The administration hall was filled with family and friends of Schmidt who had come out in his support. Councilman Brown was the first to take the floor and expressed what he called dissatisfaction in Commissioner Schmidt's performance.

He said that in line with his party's mandate, reflected during the election campaign in March, which emphasised "hope for change," he did not see progress on the part of Schmidt's efforts and was not impressed with the manner in which Schmidt had not felt obliged to share information or attend important meetings over the past eight months.

He also pointed out that because Schmidt had submitted the budget almost four weeks late, the CFT had placed higher supervision on the Government. Brown said he was willing to support Schmidt in any other capacity where his expertise could best be realised. He then presented the motion.

The motion was signed by Council members Zaandam, Lijfrock-Marsden and Brown. The voting was done by secret ballot. The motion was adopted two for and one blank. The audience was said to be emotional, either cheering or mourning.
