As Christmas dawns, plans to usher in 2012 get started

While Christians celebrate the dawn of Christmas today, the festive air has spilled over to the streets and shops in Colombo which are elegantly decorated as people ready themselves to user in the New Year in a weeks? time.

City hotels as usual have organized New Year?s Eve programs and they have introduced special events where say are�already �fully booked.

A spokesperson from the Cinnamon Grand Hotel said that from about mid of this year the main events for New Year was sold out, without any advertising.��?Foreigners and Sri Lankans living overseas are here in large numbers for holidays and want to join in the celebrations," he said.

There is also word of caution from the health authorities and Police on how the enjoy the New Year season in safety.
Many of the accidents occurring during the New Year in previous years due to the influence of alcohol.

"Even fire cracker injuries among the adults have occurred due to the influence of alcohol, said Pushpa Zoysa, National Coordinator (Training) Accident and Orthopedic Service at the National Hospital Sri Lanka (NHSL)

?When firing crackers all should be very careful, youngsters throw crackers to the vehicles and other people, these types of behaviors should be avoided? she said

She strongly advised against driving under the influence of alcohol. ?Sometimes when drivers get influenced by alcohol they will lose control and the behavior of the pedestrians would not help them to take decisions which will meet them with accidents? she said.

SSP K. Arasaratnam, Director Traffic Administration and Road Safety told the Sunday Times that this year the police are especially on the lookout for drunken drivers.

?Everywhere we have put the traffic police on day and night duty to ensure traffic and road rules are complied with.?
