Bus drivers say holiday transit plan ?flowing?

PHILIPSBURG--Friday morning started out hectic, but bus drivers quickly got into the rhythm of their new transit plan. Bus Drivers Association President Jose Slac says that despite a few minor hiccups, public transport is now "flowing nicely."

Slac reported that 63 bus drivers had signed up to be part of the programme. Each was given blue streamers to attach to his bus. This will be the identifying mark so controllers can see which buses are allowed on Back Street during the scheduled road closures.

An issue of concern was that drivers of private cars attempted to remove the barricade so that they could have access to Back Street. Because police were not present, it was difficult to stop some of these drivers. "We haven't really gotten the support from the police we were hoping for," said Slac.

Another issue was the lack of buses travelling the French Quarter route. Slac said not enough drivers from that route had signed up. As a temporary solution, a few buses volunteered to take passengers going that way. The number of buses on Back Street was then cut from five to four. Those going to French Quarter first made stops in Middle Region and Dutch Quarter, and then finally were able to go on to French Quarter.

Drivers were said to be pleased with the situation and to hope to continue it beyond the holiday season. Many of the buses leaving Philipsburg were filled with passengers.

Slac is hoping that in the following days more drivers ? particularly those driving the French Quarter route ? will join in the programme.
