Detainee escapes from Pointe Blanche prison

POINT BLANCHE--Detainee Omar Smith ?Chucky? Nelson (21), a vital suspect in connection with several armed robbery cases and an ongoing robbery and murder investigation involving six other suspects, has escaped through the roof of his solitary confinement cell at Pointe Blanche prison.

The Daily Herald understands that Nelson escaped from his cell using an improvised saw. He reportedly was being held in solitary confinement away from his peers to ensure his safety and was housed in a location away from the general prison population.

A police press statement noted that Nelson had escaped from the prison during the early morning hours Sunday. It also stated, ?Although Nelson has not been irrevocably convicted, the Prosecutor?s Office has decided to publish this notification [about him] in the press.?

Nelson has been accused of involvement in a series of violent crimes, amongst them armed robberies and car thefts. He reportedly has confessed his role in the majority of those cases that are now before the court.

?Given the current situation in St. Maarten, with several fatal crimes under investigation, the Prosecutor considers it proper to inform the public as much as it can,? the press release further stated.

The public is being called on to notify authorities in the event that Nelson?s whereabouts are known.

The press statement continued: ?The Prosecutor?s Office also calls upon the suspect himself to stop his useless flight, since this will probably bring him into more problems than face conviction.?
