~Rosenmller report in Second Chamber tomorrow~
WILLEMSTAD--Curaao Governor Frits Goedgedrag is consulting the faction leaders in Parliament on the recent developments regarding the state of governance on the island. The report of Paul Rosenmller and Cees Maas that sparked his initiative will be discussed in the Second Chamber of Dutch Parliament on Wednesday.
The PAR, FOL and PS parties all confirmed their invitation from the governor. PS-leader Helmin Wiels already had his conversation with Goedgedrag and was not at liberty to discuss the content, but maintained his position that the report is not worth discussing because it has no legal basis locally.
It is well known that the coalition party is not impressed by the findings and recommendation to install a Committee of Wise Heads to get to the bottom of doubts regarding the integrity of MFK-ministers Gerrit Schotte, George "Jorge" Jamaloodin and Abdul Nasser El Hakim. PS-faction member and Chairman of Parliament Ivar Asjes even called it a "coup attempt" from the political establishment in The Hague to provoke intervention from the kingdom into the internal affairs of Curaao.
He said the report was one-sided, partial and unprofessional. "It shows a lack of respect for our democratic constitutional state and our Prosecutor's Office in particular," Asjes added.
"Dutch politicians and their forty local allies (Rosemller and Maas spoke to about 40 people on the island-Ed.) must wait for Curaao's Parliament to get the result of the inquiry by the Audit Chamber into the actions of Central Bank President Emsley Tromp and the ongoing investigations into Jamaloodin and El Hakim by the prosecution (which had earlier cleared both Schotte and Tromp of punishable acts-Ed.). As long as we are busy with our internal affairs the Kingdom Government cannot impose anything," warned Asjes.
The main opposition party PAR in a press release said "we let the chance go by to solve our own problems and spare Curaao the shame it is now being put through." Because the report suggests that three ministers would probably not have been appointed had they been properly screened, PAR feels the three MFK-ministers being looked into should step down pending the investigation, "which is the normal thing to do."
FOL-leader Anthony Godett said the report is a controversial matter and the current situation must be studied carefully. "Something has to give, because we cannot continue like this," said the veteran opposition member.
The Second Chamber will discuss the report with Minister Piet Hein Donner in the Committee Kingdom Relations on Wednesday. Other topics include the vision of the Rutte-cabinet in the future of the kingdom, the note by Donner on the applicability of the guarantee function and the WODC report on the state of governance in Aruba.
The Curaao Government will give its comments in the report and forward this to Parliament. Until then, Prime Minister Schotte has no comment.
