Customs Officer disarmed, and arrested at night club

SUCKER GARDEN--G.A.C., a security guard at Blue Sky/Carolina Night Club in Sucker Garden, was threatened by an off-duty Customs officer on November 12 at approximately 4:30am.

On the scene G.A.C. explained he had been in discussion with other security officers when L.E.G., armed with a handgun, had interrupted and uttered threats. G.A.C. managed to disarm L.E.G. before he could use the weapon, after which the weapon was kept in a safe area until the police arrived.

A call was placed and a police patrol unit was sent to the adult entertainment club to investigate the situation. There the police found the weapon to be fully loaded and confiscated it. L.E.G. was still on the scene, but refused to identify himself. However, the police learned arrival that he was a Customs Officer.

L.E.G. was arrested on the spot and taken to the Philipsburg police station. At the station he continued to be uncooperative and therefore was held for further questioning. Police also informed L.E.G.'s superiors of the situation.

Customs head Anthony Doran explained that by law Customs officers are allowed to carry their service weapons 24 hours a day, even when off duty. This policy holds same for police officers. If questioned, officers must identify themselves as members of law enforcement.

When off duty, officers may leave their weapons at home, but they have to be kept in the required safe. If an officer is found to be using his or her weapon inappropriately, the head of the department may choose to carry out disciplinary measures. In more serious cases a criminal investigation may be carried out.
