Eight years asked for shooting at car park

PHILIPSBURG--The Prosecutor's Office asked for eight years Wednesday, against a 21-year-old man it is holding responsible for a shooting, the threatening of a person, firearm possession and car theft.

The shooting took place at Le Grand March car park on February 16. A woman, who was trying to recover a vehicle that belonged to Express Car Rental, sustained a gunshot wound to her right hip after several shots were fired at the car.

In a separate incident on February 22, suspect A.G. is accused of threatening to shoot another person. He allegedly pulled and aimed a firearm stating, "I will blow your head off clean."

The suspect was also charged with possession of a firearm and sharp ammunition, and the theft of the rental car, a Hyundai Accent, which was stolen on January 25.

Prosecutor Dounia Benammar considered all charges proven. "He used a firearm on two occasions and went on a shooting spree," she said in asking the court for an eight-year prison sentence.

A.G. was arrested on March 24, and released by the judge of instruction on August 3. This was the first time the car mechanic by profession came in contact with the law.

His attorney, Melinda Hoeve, asked for an acquittal on the car theft charge stating that her client had had no knowledge the car was stolen. A.G. told Judge Monique Keppels he had traded the car for his friend's car, and said no money or paperwork had been involved in the deal.

Hoeve stated her client should be released from prosecution for the attempted manslaughter charges because he allegedly acted in self-defence.

"My client responded to what he thought was the theft of a car of which he considered himself to be the lawful owner," Hoeve said. "My client never had the intention to take anybody's life."

Hoeve also asked for her client's acquittal on the threat-charges, because her client denied the allegation and there was insufficient proof in the case file for a conviction.

Judge Keppels will give her decision on December 7.
