Pension payments through Post Office resume today

PHILIPSBURG--Postal Services St. Maarten (PSS) has been awarded the contract to pay out the monthly old age pension again at the Post Office in Philipsburg. Starting today, November 1, PSS will issue pension payments up to and including Monday November 7, 2011.

"All pensioners who were accustomed to collecting their pension at the Post Office can now do so again," said PSS Managing Director Denicio Richardson, adding that PSS continued to provide other services at the Post Office.

In related news, Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Wiliams toured the Post Office last week and spoke with employees to get an update since the signing of the Transfer, Support and Assistance Agreement on Saturday, October 15, guaranteeing postal services for the country.

"During my meeting with the staff, I stressed to them how important it was for them and management to be creative and think outside the box to ensure the longevity of PSS. While traditional postal services will remain, it was primarily the non-postal activities that need to be developed in order to have a competitive and financially healthy company in the long term," the PM said.

"Our strength is our employees and they now have to make service priority number one. While there are still some uncertainties and challenges, the general sentiments were that we can and we must make it work."

All concession-related postal services and employees were transferred to PSS as of October 2011. This means that all revenues and operational expenses of the concession-related services will be for the account of PSS.

Parties agreed that NPNA would support PSS with the management of PSS for the period October 15 through December 31, 2011, referred to as the support period, to provide universal postal service in St. Maarten.
